Don’t be afraid to dream big!

The big red ant carrying big world above head on ramp dark background with 3d rendering.

Disclaimer: My goal in this post is to inspire you to do one thing…DREAM BIG!!!! And to do it in a way that aligns with scripture by seeking God as you dream. Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think, according to the power that works in us. At the end of the day all some people care about is making money. That is not why we seek to be used by God, even if it for the purpose of accomplishing the dream.

Here lies the problem: many of us who profess Christ as our Lord and Savior but living a life of day to day expecting nothing more than what we have and no longer have the courage to dream about what could be.

This is an affront to God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, who made all things. He spoke that there would be light and there was light, the Heavens and the Earth, the sky and the land, every living creature and man. We disregard Ephesians 3:20 and allow the enemy to keep us powerless in seeing the miracles of God.

Now, let me also state this: I’ve battled with the “I believe God can do those things, but not through me” so this post is just as much for me as it is for you. Because why can’t God do those things through me?! God used Moses to be a great deliver despite his speech impediment. God used Ruth to bring restoration to her mother in law which put her in the lineage of David which also puts her in the lineage of the Lord. God used the woman at the well, she had one encountered with Jesus and won an entire city. Then despite my present condition God use me!

What could be?

For the purpose of this post, woman of God/man of God I want you to take captive those thoughts and I want you to see what could be rather than what is now. Hebrews 11:1 says, “now faith is the substances of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith and dreaming go hand in hand because we don’t dream of things we can’t see; we have to see it first. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw himself being a world changer thus we are still honoring his legacy today. So, here is where I want us to begin, believing what God can do through us if we are just willing to dream by having faith in what He can do and not rely on what we can do.

Which is exactly what Dr. King did. He dreamed of things that could be and not what already was.

Are you afraid?

God always calls you to something bigger than yourself. If your dreams don’t scare you then more than likely you don’t have a “God-dream” you have a goal.  Anytime you have a “God-dream” you will be afraid. But, you will have to decide if the fear of failure or obeying God is more important to you. Dr. King I’m sure was very afraid but was willing to be brave and because of it, as African Americans we don’t have to sit at the back of the bus, we don’t have to go around back at a restaurant, we get to use the same library as White people. Of course, racism still exists and always will until Jesus comes but I think you get my point. Dr. King knew that if his dream was going to come to pass then he was going to have to be willing to sacrifice. For him, it meant going to jail, time spent away from his family, being ridicule and beaten and ultimately it cost him his life. I’m not saying that your dream has to cost you your life, however, I challenge you to not want to just have your dream to come pass for you, it’s bigger than you! Your dream should be so big that its for your generation and those who come after you. You will have to be willing to sacrifice something to see your “God-dream come” to pass.

Is your dream about you or God?

Will this dream make you look good to your family, friends and peers? Or are you willing to pursue the dream because in the end you know that God will get the glory in it? Are you relying on your own ability to bring this dream to pass or do you realize that its going to be a miracle performed by God if this dream is going to manifest?

Which leads to the next important area. If your dream is a “God-dream”, you will not be able to accomplish it on your own and not only need the power of God, but you will need others around you. God has called us into community. You need your community of faith to help you accomplish your dream. They will help you with it, pray for it, keep you accountable to it and it will be a heck of a lot better than it could have been if you tried to do it on your own.

This is ultimately what “God-dreams” should do. “God dreams should” = Our Own (Psalm 37:4). This is what it all comes down to when dreaming. God’s dream will always be bigger than our own. They will and should scare the hell out of us, we should need other people and it should touch people’s lives for the glory of God. That’s how you know when it’s a God-dream or your personal goal.

Question? Did this help you understand the difference between a personal goal or a God-dream? If not, what questions do you have?

Are you inspired to dream big?

As a person living with a disability challenge is part of my life. I struggled with my identity and I recognize that I still have insecurities to face, but that doesn't mean I can't walk in everything God has purposed me to walk in despite my insecurities. Because of the nature of my condition and physical disability, God's grace is evident in my life everyday and I find strength in the word of God that says in Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through him who gives me power". (CJB).

  1. Very encouraging post, Kim. Dr. King is indeed an inspiration to all of us. He had a huge dream to change the world. After reading your post I realized this is the type of dream that God gives us – a dream that will make life better for others. Sometimes we get stuck in our own personal dream that only affect one person, but God is bigger than this.

I also have a big dream. I would have given up on it a long time ago if I was not 100 percent sure that God gave it to me. As you said only God can make the dream become a reality. It will take a miracle from God.

My quation to you Kim is this: What if you cannot find anyone to help you accomplish your dream? You pray and you ask for help but no one is willing to help, what do you do? Bear in mind that you are sure that your dream is from the Lord.

    1. Then I would say woman of God then you move forward into what God told you to do and as you move, God will send you the people you need. I have made this mistake so many times: Never stand still waiting on other people. Remember that the scripture says, we walk by faith and not by sight….as you walk God will provide you with what you need. Did this help?

  2. Thanks Kim! I know God is leading me to believe for and pray for bigger things and I have to overcome fear with His help and step out on faith. I believe in community too. He sends the right people and resources our way.

    1. You’re welcome Dawn! I’m fighting to overcome fear too. We do not overcome the effects of a bad situation by denying or ignoring it that causes negative emotions, but rather speaking biblical truths to our circumstances and responding by what the Word of God says. The enemy wants us to live in constant fear and burdened by our cares of the world.

  3. Wow, excellent opening photo! I used to watch ants as a child and be amazed at their determination and energy to overcome many obstacles in their paths! Which leads to this outstanding Blog Post and how sharply focused it is upon the power of having faith in God’s power to work miracles in our individual lives and paths allowing us to overcome apparent or otherwise forbidding obstacles to go on and accomplish feats of greatness in His name by and through Him who overcame all against Him even death! Just as by the Father with Jesus all was made whole again, we too are only made whole and born again through Him the Son Jesus Christ! He is “the way the path and the life!” I once as a very young man dreamed big and packed my suitcases and drove off from one coast to another not having a clue what I would do when I got there than follow my dream to work in the movie industry. I knew I had brains and talents but all raw and not organized, nonetheless I managed to be in the right place at the right time and went from the street into the studios not knowing anyone at all but trusting with my faith that God would deliver me and He did when he brought me to a chance encounter or so it seemed but was actually really by His design when I met a young lady from Beverly Hills when I visited UCLA to check out the film and television department. By that one meeting I went from knowing nobody in those parts to getting right into the studio that week through one of her contacts working in a major studio, to then from that going on and meeting some of the nicest and very well established people already working in the business! But, ultimately my dream at that point in time was not God’s for me as I thought it should be, but was to open my eyes to what was more important and where I should focus my attention because all I had been doing was dreaming of fulfilling a desire to find fame and fortune not do the will of God! Dreaming the right dream big is the key and that is found by doing His will, allowing Him to use our lives as His instrument and for His purposes not our own. Who knows what is best for each of us better than Him our Lord and Savior!
This Blog has been and is very succinct in touching on most if not all of the primary principles required to Dream Big that Jesus gave to each of us by His sacrifice telling us clearly as He did and now with your explanation here; that with Jesus all things are possible, all we need do is follow His will for us! Thank you for this beautiful view of so much truth and wisdom. This got my attention Big-Time!!!

    1. Thank you so much Lawrence for reading and for sharing your amazing story! To teach us the danger of laziness and being unproductive in our lives, God points us to a creature we wouldn’t likely think of “the an” (Proverbs 6:6). God tells us to learn valuable lessons from the ant. When I saw this photo it went parallel to my message in my post. I’m so glad that you were blessed and hope that you are inspired to dream big! God bless you!

      1. You’re welcome Kim! Yes this message you shared and the accompanying photo were so noticeable and compelling to me! My lesson way back then was that my not being lazy and getting my butt in gear to do something productive which even though was a fantasy goal in a sense, but still something I would always regret if I didn’t address the question gnawing at me or find out for myself what the real truth was about that dream of mine and in the final analysis my big effort was not in vain, because it was a God blessed opportunity to open my eyes to what the truth was in these certain things I wanted to achieve and how those stacked up against certain other important duties, obligations or even the urgent needs of loved ones which were more important in the scheme of things; and in my heart those were the things I would want to serve most anyway!
Not for lack of a better comparison but one that does fit well my final realization was like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz who said, “There’s no place like home!” Home is where the heart is isn’t it! And in that entire journey I found that sacrifice was a big part of my personal mission for God! I had loved ones who had to take precedent over my own personal desires or ego!
Serving others is so important and in doing this we are serving our Lord as well if it is His will, and my case it was the right thing to do! Blessings to You and Yours!

      2. Many people have this misconception that being “called” by God is something only Pastors and leaders of the Church are called to do. But the Bible says as Kingdom Citizens (Christians) we serve God by serving others (Galatians 5:13). We are not saved by serving but because we are saved we serve. We cannot serve until we come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Until we experience the transforming power of God’s grace in our lives, we are enslaved by own self-centeredness to think about other people. Without the freedom of forgiveness, which is the crux of Christianity, we would serve for the wrong reasons i.e. trying to earn the approval of others, trying to escape our pain, trying to deal with guilt, trying to impress God etc..Serving by these erroneous reasons is bound to leave you burned out and bitter in the end.

The number one reason we don’t have time to serve others is because we are too preoccupied with our own agenda. We must be motivated by love when we serve, God is far more interested in why you serve others than in how well you serve them. He always looks at the heart, serving willingly out of our love for Him and gratitude for all He’s done for us. We reflect Jesus when we have a servant’s heart (John 13:14-15).

Blessings to you and yours as well!

      3. Kim you put that so beautifully and I must say as faithful as I thought I was over the years, as a younger man I had so much to realize and needed the huge chances or opportunities that the Lord gave me to broaden my horizons because I was seeking the wrong goal a few times back then and many of these wrongs you mentioned I was guilty of but still a decent believing person! Just not in alignment with God’s will for me as I see it or well enough to do as good a job at listening to Him as I could have or was capable of at times. Although my genuine heart is what made the biggest difference because I was always giving to others with my heart out of love so I know God valued that about me more than all the other stuff I did combined!
Now I look at it the way Rev. Billy Graham described his own life as a great example of truly serving; as you put it! He said that he only wanted a simple truth and epitaph on his memorial which is what he knew his own life was about, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:23.

      4. In the end, As Believers our goal is to hear, well done thy good and faithful servant. The most scariest words to hear is , “depart from me I never knew you.” That’s why its so important for us not to lose our fire for God. My Apostle said it best tonight, “if you lose your fire then you lose your desire for what you require.”

      5. Oh so true that we don’t want to hear those words of condemnation, those would be the worst and final nail in the coffin for a life of rebellion leading only to the arms of the most rebellious of them all, Satan. This is why we all should get more in tune with the word of the Lord thy God through Jesus Christ, so that we learn to listen well to His voice calling out to us, in our hearts, during this really short time that we have in this world! Amen.
