Don’t be afraid to dream big!

Disclaimer: My goal in this post is to inspire you to do one thing…DREAM BIG!!!! And to do it in a way that aligns with scripture by seeking God as you dream. Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think, according to the power that works in us. At the end of the day all some people care about is making money. That is not why we seek to be used by God, even if it for the purpose of accomplishing the dream.

Here lies the problem: many of us who profess Christ as our Lord and Savior but living a life of day to day expecting nothing more than what we have and no longer have the courage to dream about what could be.

This is an affront to God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, who made all things. He spoke that there would be light and there was light, the Heavens and the Earth, the sky and the land, every living creature and man. We disregard Ephesians 3:20 and allow the enemy to keep us powerless in seeing the miracles of God.

Now, let me also state this: I’ve battled with the “I believe God can do those things, but not through me” so this post is just as much for me as it is for you. Because why can’t God do those things through me?! God used Moses to be a great deliver despite his speech impediment. God used Ruth to bring restoration to her mother in law which put her in the lineage of David which also puts her in the lineage of the Lord. God used the woman at the well, she had one encountered with Jesus and won an entire city. Then despite my present condition God use me!

What could be?

For the purpose of this post, woman of God/man of God I want you to take captive those thoughts and I want you to see what could be rather than what is now. Hebrews 11:1 says, “now faith is the substances of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith and dreaming go hand in hand because we don’t dream of things we can’t see; we have to see it first. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw himself being a world changer thus we are still honoring his legacy today. So, here is where I want us to begin, believing what God can do through us if we are just willing to dream by having faith in what He can do and not rely on what we can do.

Which is exactly what Dr. King did. He dreamed of things that could be and not what already was.

Are you afraid?

God always calls you to something bigger than yourself. If your dreams don’t scare you then more than likely you don’t have a “God-dream” you have a goal.  Anytime you have a “God-dream” you will be afraid. But, you will have to decide if the fear of failure or obeying God is more important to you. Dr. King I’m sure was very afraid but was willing to be brave and because of it, as African Americans we don’t have to sit at the back of the bus, we don’t have to go around back at a restaurant, we get to use the same library as White people. Of course, racism still exists and always will until Jesus comes but I think you get my point. Dr. King knew that if his dream was going to come to pass then he was going to have to be willing to sacrifice. For him, it meant going to jail, time spent away from his family, being ridicule and beaten and ultimately it cost him his life. I’m not saying that your dream has to cost you your life, however, I challenge you to not want to just have your dream to come pass for you, it’s bigger than you! Your dream should be so big that its for your generation and those who come after you. You will have to be willing to sacrifice something to see your “God-dream come” to pass.

Is your dream about you or God?

Will this dream make you look good to your family, friends and peers? Or are you willing to pursue the dream because in the end you know that God will get the glory in it? Are you relying on your own ability to bring this dream to pass or do you realize that its going to be a miracle performed by God if this dream is going to manifest?

Which leads to the next important area. If your dream is a “God-dream”, you will not be able to accomplish it on your own and not only need the power of God, but you will need others around you. God has called us into community. You need your community of faith to help you accomplish your dream. They will help you with it, pray for it, keep you accountable to it and it will be a heck of a lot better than it could have been if you tried to do it on your own.

This is ultimately what “God-dreams” should do. “God dreams should” = Our Own (Psalm 37:4). This is what it all comes down to when dreaming. God’s dream will always be bigger than our own. They will and should scare the hell out of us, we should need other people and it should touch people’s lives for the glory of God. That’s how you know when it’s a God-dream or your personal goal.
